Katelyn - Educator
I have been working with the wonderful staff and children of Through the Years since August 2014. I have worked hard during my first year studying and taking courses and have recently completed my Working with Children in a Child Care Facility certificate. I'm looking forward to being with the oldest school age group this year, the Superstars, and sharing lots of good times. I have a daughter, Brianna, and we live in Mill cove with our two cats and puppy.
I live in Chester with my husband and two cats. Child care has been a part of my life ever since I was eleven years old when I started babysitting. My first "real job" was working at a licensed day care centre for the summer. For 10 years I provided child care in my home which was great but also a challenge. I returned to a licensed centre when hire by Through the Years in 2007. It's been very exciting to watch the children learn, grow, acquire new skills and move on to the next challenge. The children here fill my heart with joy. Each day is a new opportunity for me to sing, dance, play, laugh and be silly with the children I work with.
I am the Program Support staff for Through the Years. I have my Level 1 ECE certification and have been working on and off in the child care field for over 18 years. It is my job to support the staff to ensure that every child, regardless of abilities, is participating in the program. I believe that by working closely with not only our staff but also the families of children with special needs, we can provide the tools, environment and opportunities to ensure EVERY CHILD reaches his / her full potential.
I joined the Through the Years staff as Administrative Assistant in 2008. I earned my Accounting & Computer Applications Diploma in 1998 from CompuCollege School of Business in Halifax. I was a volunteer for Through the Years prior to joining the staff, sitting on our Board and also running the Monday night card game with my husband Wayne. Our daughter Makayla started at Through the Years when she was 20 months old and continues coming now when not in school. My main responsibility at Through the Years is bookkeeping but I also help the Director and staff when needed with various tasks. In my spare time I am a volunteer member of the District 2 Fire Commission; I enjoy camping, walking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
I am really excited to be working at Through the Years because of the great kids here! My educational background includes attending Dalhouse and NSCAD for Social Anthropology and Photography with a focus on childhood development across cultures. This has led me to coordinate and participate in many projects for youth all over the world, and has finally brought me here, where I can be involved in education and recreation activities for local youth. I look forward to sharing my experiences with everyone and exploring my interests further by being an active part of the community.
I first started working with children in 2007 as an Educational Assistant for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board. While there I worked with children from elementary to high school. I discovered that even though we can make a positive impact on children's lives at any age the "early years" is where I wanted to start. So while deciding what educational route I would take, I was a cook for 2 restaurants (great experience). I decided that the Early Childhood Education diploma at NSCC would be my goal and I am completing that online while working as an ECE. I got my first position as a toddler teacher at a centre in Hammonds Plains and spent 8 months there. Captivated by the curiosity and drive the children had to learn (and all they were teaching me) I knew I made the choice of the right field. I plan to explore all the educational opportunities in the field as they become available and look forward to getting to know and teaching your children. I currently live in Mill Cove with my husband and two children.
I started working at Through the Years in November 2013 as an infant room teacher. I am returning to the Centre after being away on an extended sick leave. I've lived in Hubbards and area all my life while I raised my two sons. Prior to starting at Through the Years, I provided child care in my home. My work experience led me to pursue my ECE diploma, which I am currently working towards through NSCC. In my spare time I love watching my boys play hockey and baseball and also love training and breeding my German Shepherds.
I've known from a young age I wanted to be an educator. As a youth I loved to babysit, through my college years my summer work was running camps and volunteering to coach children soccer and baseball. My career goals led me to take a Bachelor of Child Study degree at Mount Saint Vincent University. I majored in Program Administration and Developmental Disabilities. My first two jobs out of college were at developmental centres where i got to work with such a diverse population of children it really began my lifelong commitment to ensuring a fully inclusive setting for all children, no matter what economic circumstance, ability or biases existed. It was while working at these centres in Halifax that my husband and I started a family and my years of education and practice helped me raise two beautiful people. It was in 2002 that my lifelong dream of working in child care in my own community came true when a group of women looking to start a nonprofit day care and community centre took a chance on me and hired me as their Director. We started out licensed for 30, then 49, then 75 when we built our new centre in Hubbards in 2010, and now have expanded to 90 licensed spaces. Our growth is thanks to the tremendously dedicated educators employed at the Centre, a community that supports the important work we do, and a Board of Directors that ensures we continue to run smoothly.
One of my strongest beliefs I instill in my staff and practice myself is the value of lifelong learning and we stay current with changes in the profession. Over 2005-2006 I earned my certificate in Management Development for Women from St. Mary's University and my certificate for Management Development for Early Childhood Administrators from Mount Saint Vincent University. I also attend several conferences a year for Administrators and belong to the Nova Scotia Child Care Association, an advocacy group for Early Childhood Educators. I consider myself so lucky to have a career I love and to work with such amazing people and consider it a privilege and honor to care for our communities' youngest citizens. In my spare time I love to walk, spend time by the ocean sea glassing, and hunt for a good deal at a yard sale. My two biggest indulgences are Diet Pepsi and the Young & the Restless.

I graduated from Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education with a Level 2 certificate in May 2016. I have always known from a young age that I wanted to work with children which became clear when I started babysitting at 12 years old, children of all ages.
I truly enjoy watching and observing children while they learn, play take risks and grow. I love engaging in their play and experience their imagination. Their curiosity, wonder and determination amaze me.
I have lived in Mill Cove for most of my life. When I'm not working, I enjoy going for walks with my dog and taking pictures of the scenery or anything that catches my eye.
Ruthanne - Program Support
I began working with children in my home where I provided child care for nearly 20 years. When I joined Through the Years in 2006, I worked mainly with our school age children; now I work with the toddlers. I especially enjoy the toddlers' fascination with the world around them and their never-ending curiosity. With this group every day is an adventure and not knowing what the toddlers will do next is the best part!
Through the Years Day Care & Community Centre
Hubbards, Nova Scotia
I graduated from Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education in 2014 and I am licensed to be a full time Early Childhood Educator in a child care centre. My goal as an ECE is to be able to help and guide children to reach their full potential while still maintaining a positive and creative environment.I have spent many of my previous years working with children of all ages, from newborn to age 12, both in and out of child care centres. These experiences include working full time in a child care centre, volunteering in a preschool as an assistant and craft director, being a summer student, being a substitute teacher and also volunteering at various church and community functions all over Canada. When I am not working I enjoy mostly drawing and painting and would consider myself a very creative person. Also I love to read books of all kinds, fact or fiction. Family means a lot to me so the rest of my time is with my very large extended family.
I joined Through the Years in June 2014. I am married with two grown children. I have lived and worked in the Hubbards community for the past 27 years. Most of my career has been working in the food service industry. I welcome this great opportunity to continue serving healthy meals to our youth. When not at the daycare, you could probably find me supporting a local Bingo hall or at the camp on Vinegar Lake.
